I Didn’t Make It by Hand. It Still Feels Like Mine.

I’ve always had more ideas than skill. I can see things in my head. I just can’t make them with my hands.

I started as a video editor. That scratched the itch for a while. I could take footage and shape it into something that felt like mine. But it wasn’t the same as making an image from nothing.

Then I found Midjourney.

Midjourney generates images from text prompts. You describe what you want. The algorithm interprets it. Sometimes it nails it. Sometimes it gives you something completely different. The interesting part is what happens when you keep going. You refine the prompt. You iterate. You push it in directions you didn’t plan.

I was just messing around. I started with a simple concept: the contrast between fat and skinny. That was it. A basic visual idea. But I kept pushing, and each round took the image further from where I started. The final piece landed somewhere I never would have gotten on my own.

The Shadows We Carry

I called it “The Shadows We Carry.” I kind of like it. I’m not going to pretend it’s a masterpiece. I typed words into a box and something came out. But the concept was mine, the iterations were mine, and the decision to stop when it felt right was mine.

Is it art? I don’t know. I’ve been making things my whole career. Films, edits, scripts, comedy bits. This is the first time I’ve made a visual image I’d put on a wall. I used AI to get there. I’m not sure what that means yet.

The tool didn’t have the idea. It didn’t know when to stop. It didn’t know what “right” looked like. I did. Whether that’s enough to call it art is a question I’m still sitting with.

I don’t have an answer. I’m not sure I need one.
